Cake Decorating at Disney Springs

Posted:  Dining Entertainment

On a personal trip in October 2019, I had the chance to go to the Amorette’s Patisserie at Disney Springs and participate in the cake decorating experience. It has recently returned as of November 16, 2022. You can find up-to-date information about the cake decorating experience on Disney’s website here:

This trip was to celebrate my birthday, and we thought, what better way to do so than to decorate my own birthday cake? The experience started at 9 am; however, we were staying at Disney’s Old Key West Resort, so we were a quick drive over to Disney Springs. We arrived around 8:30 am and enjoyed a morning stroll around an empty Disney Springs before the experience began.

As well as being a huge Disney fan, Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. So we lucked out with going on Friday, where it was the Artist’s Choice Character Cake, which happened to be a Halloween-themed Minnie Mouse dome cake. There are two types of dome cakes offered depending on the day of the week you sign up for, a Classic Mickey Design and the Artist’s Choice Character Cake.

Included in the cost of the experience is one dome cake, attendance for two guests, and unlimited beverages, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, and it takes about 90 minutes to complete.

When we first arrived, we entered the shop and were guided to a table with all the supplies needed to decorate the dome cake. We had a few moments before the experience began, so we grabbed a drink to enjoy while we decorated.

Table Setting for Cake Decorating

The first thing we did was try a sample of the frosting and the cake, as these were already prepared for us. The cake and icing process takes several hours to be completed with a cooling down period, so this is done ahead of time to keep the experience short. The frosting was a delicious buttercream frosting that was nice and light. The cake was a Lemon Chiffon cake with white chocolate mousse and strawberry paté de fruit jelly. It had these wonderful crispy pearls that added an enjoyable crunch.

For the next step, we added the glaçage to the cake. The glaçage needs to harden before adding another layer, so the assistant bakers take the cakes into the freezer to speed up the process. In total, we added three layers of glaçage to our cake before we received this bright orange color on our cake. The cakes are placed in a cooling rack on a baking sheet with parchment paper to catch all the extra runoff from the cake, so there is no need to worry about cleaning up the mess.

Instructor of the class

In between each of the layers hardening, our head baker shared wonderful stories about his previous jobs working at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa and his current role at Amorette’s. I was in awe hearing about the process it takes to make some of these pastries, and the time it takes to create each piece that goes into these masterpieces. With only 12 other people in the experience, it felt very personal and close. It was very easy to ask questions if there was any confusion about the process or the next steps.

We also worked on painting the ears with edible paint, cutting the fondant to create Minnie’s face, and decorating Minnie’s bow in between adding the layers. The ears were made of white chocolate, and the paint had no additional flavor. They were their own treat to enjoy in addition to the cake. The fondant was the best I have ever had. It was fluffy like a marshmallow and wasn’t too sweet.

As the cakes do need to remain refrigerated, Amorette’s will hold the cakes for you until you are done shopping and exploring Disney Springs. We were so grateful for this option because the Florida heat was on the rise as we approached 11 am.

After we finished our shopping at Disney Springs, we went back to Amorette’s to pick up our cake, and we were given it in a wonderful ornamental box. We took the bus back to our resort, and the cake remained cool on the short bus ride and arrived safely back in the villa. After our dinner that evening, we finally got to cut the cake. All my hard work definitely paid off. The cake was exquisite and better than I could have ever imagined.

The entire experience was terrific, simple, and a great way to make amazing memories (and a fun way to get a delicious cake). I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a special way to celebrate.
